This year we have synth-infused jazz, an indomitable final album, a fiery debut from a thrilling new quartet, expansive cosmic jazz, and plenty more sonic explorations.
Thanks for hipping me to Flight, which turned out to be one of my favorite records this year. The quintet side with pedal steel is especially delightful.
That was a good read, thank u 🙏 looking forward to revisiting some of these, plus excited to hear ones that I’m only now discovering thanks to u like the ones by Mendoza Hoff Revels, Daniel Rotem and Scree. Happy new year 🎊
Love the Jaime Branch and Necks albums, so I’m looking forward to making my way through this list.. I managed to snag the last available ticket for the Necks in Nottingham in April, can’t wait!
Great list, balancing things I love with things I don’t know and will now make time to hear. One question: I’ve deleted my exTwitter account and haven’t looked back, but it does mean I can’t see the list of Necks recommendations you linked to. That’s my loss and no one else’s problem, but might you cite the titles recommended most strongly? Or the ones you’ve responded to most?
First of all, thank you so much for reading! The idea of balancing things you already love with things you don't know is absolutely my goal and it's very gratifying to have achieved it. Second, yes! I'd say the five most recommended titles would be:
I just recently subscribed and must say this list was excellent! I have a very difficult time keeping up with contemporary jazz releases but may do as you do and follow labels going forward. As for your list, I powered my way through everything here at my office job this week and was delighted to re-discover Matthew Halsall whose latest project is simply gorgeous. But more than that mere re-discovering, I thank you for putting me on to the wild and epiphanic Mendoza Hoff Revels album as well as the Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer & Shahzad Ismaily collaboration, which has been such a brooding, meandering journey I've gotten lost in it during three playthroughs today alone. I look forward to reading about more of your jazz discoveries in 2024.

So glad you checked it out! I agree, that pedal steel really adds something special to their interpretations.

Thank you so much, Kerem! Your support means a lot and so glad to have introduced you to those three artists in particular. Happy New Year to you too!

The last available ticket, what luck!! I’m terribly jealous. ☺️

First of all, thank you so much for reading! The idea of balancing things you already love with things you don't know is absolutely my goal and it's very gratifying to have achieved it. Second, yes! I'd say the five most recommended titles would be:
• Aether (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp5NA4xIjFg)
• Unfold (https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/unfold)
• Open (https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/open)
• Hanging Gardens (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AyYmGOHuKE&t=3s)
• Sex (https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/sex)
And in addition to those, all of which hit me strongly, I'd add Body (https://thenecksau.bandcamp.com/album/body).
Thanks again, Ana… and here, too, is another list balancing albums I do and don't know. A new adventure!!
