Hello! My name is Ana and I am a hater. But I also love often and strongly, and I really love sharing the things that I love with others who I suspect may love them as well. In Sick Sad Motherslug, I’ll be sharing books, music, viewing material, podcasts, and longform articles which have caught and kept my attention.

Sometimes these will be new things and sometimes these will be old things. Art or food or design might come up too. I’ve been toying with the idea of doing small interviews with people who are creating things that interest me and this newsletter is a possible avenue for those as well.

“I write so that other people can discover what they should love, and sometimes so they discover what I love. I write in order not to forget what is most important in the world: friendship and love, wisdom and art.” – Silvina Ocampo

I have written lots of things for Detroit Metro Times (our city’s last standing alt-weekly), a few things for Aquarium Drunkard, one thing for Bandcamp, and have contributed pieces large and small to Maggot Brain, a full-color print-only quarterly magazine curated and edited by Mike McGonigal, brought to us by Third Man Records. Most recently (as of December 2022), I’ve been reviewing albums for Uncut Magazine’s print edition.

This newsletter is an excuse for me to casually write more often and will remain free for as long as I feel like doing it. If you have questions or comments or recommendations or anything to say at all, send it here: anagavrilovska@gmail.com. You can find me on Twitter and Instagram, too.

A note on hating: I don’t take too much pleasure in arguing over matters of taste unless there is a moral question, but bonding over a shared hatred of specific cultural crap is fucking euphoric.
